Department of Human Development and Education

The Human Development and Education Department is concerned with theoretical and practical study of the process by which humans develop as individuals while supporting and being supported by those around them. Throughout the course of their lives, people travel to new environments and meet new people, creating a new “self” in the process. Although we may feel that we develop certain skills and values automatically, in fact we gain these abilities through a variety of developmental mechanisms. We must also note that human development is not isolated from the influence of society and culture. In terms of communication, knowledge, and skills, children of the Internet age are vastly different from their parents. This Department applies social and historical perspectives to the examination of human development, the conditions that affect human development, and strategies to resolve social problems.
