Department of Human Environmental Science

Our environment is undergoing enormous transformations caused by globalization, climate change, depletion of resources, highly advanced information technology, and an aging population accompanied by a low birth rate. Human Environmental Science is concerned with creating an environment that supports human development. Instruction within the department has the following three characteristics. First, the course is interdisciplinary in nature, and therefore focuses on expanding students’ range of knowledge in numerous areas across the sciences and humanities. Second, a high level of specialization is also an important feature of the course. We provide specialized instruction in four areas of study: Natural Environmental Science, Mathematics and Informatics, Living Environment, and Social Environment. Third, the course focuses on practical skills. In addition to lectures, the course strongly emphasizes practical work, surveys, and fieldwork, all of which enable students to investigate issues related to the human environment.
