Division of Behavioral Development

Developing a wide range of analytical and problem-solving skills in behavioral development and adaptation

Keywords
aging, behavioral development, adaptability, social science, natural science, interdisciplinary and comprehensive research

Advances in technology and the aging population are issues of the modern society that essentially relate to human behavior, and to address the issues, we need a greater understanding of the mechanisms and principles of how human behavior evolves as a person ages, and how a person adapts his or her behavior to society and the environment. Aiming for a broader viewpoint on actual human behavior from the perspective of the social and natural sciences, this course focuses on a number of fields, including gerontology, exercise gerontology, sociology, applied physiology, motor science, and behavioral adaptation. Students will develop the ability to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to matters related to human behavioral development and adaptation to the environment in old age.

The Behavioral Development Course includes four specific objectives for interdisciplinary, comprehensive learning: 1) developing a comprehensive understanding of human behavior ranging from physical mechanisms to social and cultural behavior; 2) developing the ability to analytically understand human behavior from the perspective of developmental theory, and from the perspective of society and culture; 3) developing methods to observe and explain human behavior from the perspective of natural science and social science; 4) developing a greater understanding of the relationship between human behavior and the environment. In order to help students achieve these objectives, the course adopts a scientific approach to development and adaptation related to the body, mind, and society; students learn how to identify issues and propose improvements on the basis of their ability to analytically explain each mechanism.

This course is ideal for graduate students who are eager to discover diverse issues faced by people in today’s society and for those who wish to tread further along the less explored paths of human behavior.
