10th Hyogo Science E-cafe "Gravitational Waves: A New Window to the Universe!"
A new age in astronomy was ushered in on September 14, 2015 with the discovery of gravitational waves by the twin Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors. The intense pulse of emission was the product of the merger of two massive stellar black holes in a binary system 1.3 billion light years from the Earth. With this discovery, an unprecedented new window to the Universe was opened which will allow us to probe physics under extreme conditions and to see the Universe at early in its evolution. In his talk, he reviews the observations and how they were made and then discuss implications of the result and future prospects for gravitational wave astronomy.
